No sense of history! What do they teach in Universities these days? I used to work with guys that started on it in the mid-60's in Ottawa (Canada Land Inventory stuff). Some of my most thrilling early days (strong overtone of sarcasm) were spent using workstation Arcinfo on a vax/vms terminal with a fuzzy 13" monitor.

I got the same letter as everyone else yesterday stating that Cindy's staff is currently reviewing the AWA proposal and hope to meet with the representatives of AWA.

Ecurb the Tim Hortons Kids Camp area and the Nordic Centre have been grandfathered into the Park.

Sounds like the Park is seriously considering the lease but still would like to give access to the general plublic for camping as well! My guess is that AWA will get half of the Meadows and the Park will get half and the AWA will get magority/priority for events. The ministry can only lobby and Park gets final say, keep your fingers crossed!

Oh Brad, we gotta get you a map or two so you know where you are out here!

The Nordic Centre is a Provincial Park, and the Tim Horton's ranch is not inside any provincial park, but is within the Kananaskis Country boundary. "The Park" isn't really a proper term since K-Country is a collection of various parks/recreational areas/non-park lands. Confusing no?

Dear Mr. Melville:

Thank you for your e-mail of October 30, 2009 regarding the Alberta Whitewater Association’s proposal to obtain a special lease at the Canoe Meadows area within Kananaskis Country. I appreciate the opportunity to respond.

The Alberta Whitewater Association has contacted my ministry about lease opportunities and redevelopment at Canoe Meadows. My staff have met with the representatives of the association and are currently reviewing the association’s proposal. Your e-mail of support will be kept as reference, should such a development at Canoe Meadows be desirable.

Thank you for sharing your views on this matter.

Sincerely,
Cindy Ady

Minister of Tourism, Parks and Recreation

Dear Ms Ady,

I am writing to express my unqualified support for the Alberta Whitewater Association's application to lease the Canoe Meadows recreation area in Kananaskis country.

This area is a world class paddling competition facility available for the training of our future Olympic athletes. The paddling community has proven itself worthy time and time again over thirty years of volunteer maintenance and stewardship of this area. Thousands of man hours of maintenance, river obstacle construction, and competition facilities have made it what it is today.

I hope you will consider this application as seriously as we in the ever growing paddling community do. Thanks for you attention and keep up your great work in the Sports, Recreation and Parks Ministry.

Richard Melville
Calgary, Alberta

Stew "And from the archives, here’s the poster from the ’88 Nationals at the Kan – anybody recognize the C1 paddler who I think won that year?"

Stew, your archives are not complete without your 1992 Olympic cards:

Thanx Barry, I had no idea that there were such cards. Do you have one for AB kayaker David Ford (5 Olympics starting in 1992, 4th in Athens in '04)?

And for the Vancouver Olympics in a couple of weeks - think snow!

I don't know about other olympics but I have a full set from 1992, all sports. David, Roy, Larry, Dan, Joanne, Margaret, Sheryl, Patrice from slalom. I'll get around to scanning a few more soon.

These cards were put out by the Canadian Olympic Association. I don't think they're doing it now, though it would be great; I checked their website. I got these because the athletes were selling sets (full Canadian team - 260 cards). Here is the entire slalom team plus a few bonus cards:
